Hello everyone, my name is Madison Neal-Hertz (but I prefer to go by Mady!) and I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. Growing up, art was a constant in my life, starting with my grandparents having a special drawer full of crayons, markers, and stacks of colorful paper just for me whenever I’d go out to their ranch. Soon, I was participating in local art contests and burying myself in drawing books to teach myself how to draw better. When I wasn’t drawing, I was watching cartoons, Disney movies, or living out my own adventures outside, fighting monsters in worlds of my own imagination.
When it became time to look at colleges, I knew I wanted art to continue to be a part of my life and I wanted to pursue it as a career. I found the school I was looking for 2,000 miles away from my small town in Nevada, in a beautiful city in Georgia: The Savannah College of Art and Design. There I fell in love with animation and dove head first into bringing new and amazing characters to life. Four years later, I was proud to leave with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in Animation.
My art has since then been inspired by any and everything; a walk in the park or even just people-watching in a cafe. Even places I’ve been have given me mountains of inspiration for characters and stories. Studying abroad, I was inspired by just the colors and personalities that made up countries such as France, the UK, and Italy. Music, movies, and even my friends and family have gotten my creative juices flowing. All that this world has to offer: the sights, smells, sounds, tastes, touch and even its people can spark my next idea or story.
Outside of art, some of my hobbies include singing, writing, reading, archery, soccer, softball and cuddling with my dog, Koda. While I work, I tend to listen to almost any kind of music, from country to EDM or even movie soundtracks. My taste in music changes a lot and heavily influences what kind of art or animation I’m drawing in the moment. If I want a high action, intense fight scene I’ll listen to a video game soundtrack or a song with a strong beat; or if I want something soft and emotional I’ll pick a ballad or a piece of classical music.
Thank you so much for stopping by and to wrap this up I leave you with a quote: “Courage is being scared to death- but saddling up anyway”. - John Wayne
